Selection of video works

The works of the Freefilmers embody their artistic approach to creating films that are alert and sensitive to reality, with a primary focus on human life and the struggle for equality and freedom. In this exhibition, the Freefilmers present a curated selection of short experimental films produced by their members between 2018 and 2023. Through their video works, viewers are taken on a journey through various Ukrainian landscapes, timelines, and mindscapes. The journey begins at an abandoned beach house, explores the possibilities of a secret garden in the Tatarka neighborhood, Kyiv, and leads to Cosmos, a neighborhood located in Zaporizhzhia. Many of the places depicted in the films are shown as they were, just before the Russian military aggression and the war in Ukraine began. This reverse experimental timeline is an act of active remembrance and bearing witness to the places where people lived, loved, and belonged. Some of these places no longer exist.

Sea. Wind. WTF, Sashko Protyah, 12min
Three friends share one abandoned house, one gloomy sky and one camera. This film was improvised and shot during a walk down the coast near Mariupol in April, 2018.

The Secret, the Girl and the Boy, Oksana Kazmina, 13min
The film was shot in a course of one day in Tatarka neighborhood, Kyiv, Ukraine. The neighborhood is a hilly territory, part of which is summer houses and gardens. The garden The Girl and The Boy play in is an abandoned one. They have time and space to experience certain behaviors out of its’ usual order.

My Cosmos, Natasha Tzeliuba, 10 min
Director returns to her native city and tells a story of her adulting in Cosmos - a neighborhood in Zaporizhzhia. She tries to define what Cosmos means to her. Is it a self-sufficient universe or traumatic experience, a neighborhood or sensation? Or maybe it is a half-flimsy cinema? She managed to say goodbye to her first home and changed her life. But is it necessary to say goodbye to space (Cosmos)?
