Dorm by Your Bros. Filmmaking Group is a story about a group of Vietnamese female workers who organise a strike against the inhumane living and working conditions in their factory.
The film is the result of a long collaborative production process, during which the participants of the project and the filmmakers wrote the script, built the set design, and shot the film together. The intention of the artists was to screate a depiction of the everyday reality of factory workers. The economically, legally, and emotionally helpless inhabitants of the Your Bros. Filmmaking Group’s Dorm speak on behalf of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers who live and work in Taiwan.
Yo-hen, Liao Hsio-hui and Tien Zong-yuan, who are the members of Your Bros. Filmmaking Group, are also my friends and artists, inspiring me to ask myself difficult questions. Since 2016, our film practices have developed alongside each other, and I think our exchange affects the way we think about art. What I learned from Your Bros. and the Tainan art community is non-institutional support, sharing resources, and togetherness.
Visiting Taiwan, I witnessed different stages of the Dorm production. I loved the slow pace of production and the joy of the weekend scriptwriting gatherings. I decided to choose the film as a starting point for a discussion about the ethics and methodologies of film collaboration.
