Stories from the Old Ruin juxtaposes reports of disintegration of modern and ancient civilisations. “Time has somehow collapsed and with it all conventional methods of getting at the truth… We imagined the last eternal night was come which should destroy the Earth and the Gods together,” the narrative concludes, as “imagining” implies a greater truth than witnessing, and since artists’ images prove to have greater verisimilitude than photographers’ documents.
