After Algeria gained independence from France in 1962, France’s CNES space centre was relocated to the little town of Kourou in the overseas territory of French Guiana, without consulting the small local population who would be displaced for this project. In Listen to the Beat of Our Images, CNES footage of the construction of the space centre as well as scenes from life in Kourou are accompanied by voice-overs from its residents and a pulsating soundtrack. Archival footage of rocket launches is shown as the only reminder of what local people lost.
