A French actress meets a Japanese architect while filming in Hiroshima fourteen years after the end of the war. The two fall in love for 24 hours – aware of what separates and will separate them. The woman’s memories of her first great (and impossible) love with a German soldier in Nevers, France, as well as the setting of Hiroshima, bring to mind the contrast between personal experience and historical setting. The first feature film by documentary filmmaker Alain Resnais, based on a screenplay by Marguerite Duras.
